10.8.1 mountain lion update internal speaker issues?

I recently downloaded the 10.8.1 mountain lion update and now my macbook pro internal speakers only work when I play media through my internet browsers - they do not work with itunes (in fact, when I press 'play' on itunes, the progress bar on top doesn't even move from 0:00) or even make the usual sounds when raising/lowering the volume. It does still chime when I turn on the computer though.

I tried resetting PRAM, no dice. I also tried messing with the 'sound' settings to no avail.
