Aug 28, 2012 5:22 PM in response to runningby MichelPM,4 GBs of RAM is not nearly enough to run both OS X Mountain Lion and PSCS6.
OS X, by itself, can use between 3 and 4 GB of RAM for the OS to run smoothly.
Leaving only 1 GB or less for running Photoshop.
Photoshop is notoriously CPU! GPU, RAM and HD intensive.
Your iMac can take a max. RAM amount of 6 GBs.
Install the additonal 2 GBs of RAM. Hopefully this will be enough to run PS sufficiently.
You can purchase reliable RAM online from either Crucial memory or from OWC.
Here are the specs for your iMac's memory
Memory Slots 2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Here is the procedures to install the additonal RAM memory, yourself.

Aug 29, 2012 9:36 AM in response to MichelPMby running,Thanks MichelPM for your reply. I added a 4GB ram in slot 0 and left slot 1 as is with a 2GB ram for a total of 6GB. Get Info shows that it is good (6GB). Same issue . Open Photoshop CS6 and select open from file menu, I get a message that states:
Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough memory (RAM).
I can not open the performance preferences either, I get the the mesage: Could not complete the Preferences command because there is not enough memory (RAM).
I just can't beleive this iMac is already obsolute.
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 6GB 800 MHz SDRAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 G5 512 MB card running 10.8.1

Aug 29, 2012 10:07 AM in response to runningby MichelPM,Are you sure about system profiler reporting 6 GBs of RAM?
Because normally, the RAM in those model iMacs are, also picky about the location of the RAM.
You need to put the 2 GB stick in slot 1 and then the 4 GB stick into slot 2.
I do not think your iMac is seeing all 6 GBs of RAM?
How big a PS file are trying to open?
Where did you purchase the RAM from?
You originally reported that you only had 4 GBs of RAM installed?
Please clarify.

Aug 29, 2012 10:56 AM in response to MichelPMby running,System Profiler is reporting 6GB Ram. I can feel/sense the extra ram. iMac refer's to their slots as 0 and 1, but I understand you. Revesed the ram so that the 2GB is in 1 and the 4GB is in the 2 slot. Same result. Yes I originally had 4GB of ram. Ram is from OWC. It does not matter what file I open, I can't open a file. I go to the file menu and select open and the evil message appears. I have also wiped the disk and reinstalled. I can also add that the Photoshop interface is blank (black) no tools showing. This same image on a MacPro Tower works fine.
I have 70 of these iMacs to make work. Currently reverting back to Lion to see if I can get some success there.
Really appreciate any input, thanks,

Aug 29, 2012 1:03 PM in response to runningby MichelPM,Your iMac is a 64 bit machine.
You cannot run CS6 in 32 bit mode, it's a 64 bit application.
Have you tried repair permissions on the drive?

Aug 29, 2012 3:33 PM in response to runningby running,I will try repairing the permissions tomorrow. Let you know if it helped. I built a new master today with 10.7.4 and CS6 on same spec's iMac. Photoshop opens files and works on 4GB of Ram. It is a Mountain Lion issue.
School starts next week, so without a solution I will run 10.7.4 on the iMacs (2008) and 10.8.1 on the MacPro Towers (2008) and 27" iMacs (2011).

Aug 29, 2012 3:48 PM in response to runningby MichelPM,Yeah,
It may well be a Mt. LIon issue.
I am glad to hear that PSCS6 works under 10.7, though.
May help to check the Adobe support forums to see if anyone else is experiencing the same issues as you and to see if someone offered a solution there.
Good Luck!
