Help with disintegration effect?

Hello, I am trying to create a disintegration effect (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzdUChvcWYk) because I enjoy trying to make effects and what not, however I tried to follow this turotial (http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/disintegration/) but it is for after effects, and I cannot find out how to recreate the same look.

Any Help would greatly be apreciated.

off the top of my head, though its not going to have the sophistication of the VideoCoPilot example.

You have a clean background and a shot with someone/thing in it to vanish.

Create a rough mask round your object, if the background plate matches you should see your object in situ still.

Animate the mask so that the object disappears in a nice way. Feather the edge of the mask so make it smooth.

Have a look at the particle emitters. You can create fire, smoke and partilce effects. Add all three to copy the effect to some extent. You will need to animate the emitters as the wipe goes through. Its a shame Motion doesnt have a shatter effect coz that would help too.

its a start

Create your particle, create an Emitter from it, set the Shape type to Image, and use the keyed image of the actor for that source. Behaviors can get the particles to do pretty much anything you want without masks.

Actually you can do shatters in Motion very easily, too.

Very easy to do. I do these type of effects quite often. Highly recommend the book "How To Cheat In Motion" by Patrick Sheffield, it still pertains to Motion 5. Section 5 of that book covers these type of effects in detail, explosions, dusting, shattering, etc.
