copy url includes http

Why does Mac copy the entire URL from http:// to where I select.

I know they've decided to 'hide' the http part now...

Yet they've not made Safari intelligent enough to know I was just selecting, not (wait for it) one click select all copy (ok paste entire url with http...)?

If I did a 1 click 'select all' and then copy, I expect to get it all, including http

But... if I click, wait click again to deselect all, then click drag over the domain the http gets included into the copy memory.

Not the rest of the url of course...

So logically, the UI should only copy the text I select, it only half completes my logical conclusion about copy/paste, that I copy what I select and can repaste this.

The outcome of this behaviour change is that:

1. copy paste from Safari doe not logicall follow basic UI expectations built up over many years

2. Hides the fact that the problem will occur, ie. http:// appears in all pasting after a manual select

3. That a single click selects all, which is the reverse behaviour of select all, from a Mac users perspective

4. That I am doing more work to copy paste snippets of text in an area of OS X than I have had to in the past.

5. That is it so annoying, as to push me to write a time wasting documentation of the entire thing here...

I'd offer to test the browser for them again, but you know, if Henry Ford asked the customer what they wanted, they'd have answered 'a faster horse' (or something).

If anyone can help me customise my Safari to behave in a logical way again, do please comment...

Many thanks, enjoy your Mac Week.

I have investigated all browsers again, and all seem to exhibit this behaviour, except one.

Camino

so I am now using Camino Browser...

Perhaps I will use Safari in the future, if the UI becomes logical again.

Actually, my running commentary... I've discovered again, previously forgot, the reason I used Safari was because it had dev tools...

So now, after some despertation, I have switched to chrome, it has the single click select all bug, but it does not copy paste the http part as detailed above...

I still prefer the safari/camino way, more mac. Chrome UI is weird, tabs upside down.

I agree, this new behavior is flawed - it's a bug, so hopefully a responsible developer will report it.

As a network guy, I double click to select only the IPs or domains in Safari's URIs to then paste them in Terminal to try pings, traceroutes, DNS lookups and such. Now, I am forced to edit the string that was copied even though I did not select the URI scheme/protocol portion of the URI string like "http://"

Apple, please fix this bug or suggest a better workaround to keep us using Safari happily.

For now, my workaround is to drag-select the IP/domain except for the first character, copy, then type that character before pasting. It's good for short-term memory practice, but bad for user experience 😉

I'm using Safari Version 6.0 (7536.25)
