Epson ICC profiles will not install in Mountain Lion

I have an Epson R1900 printer which requiress icc profiles. The generally agreed route has been to use those from Epson of America and these work fine on my PC. On the Mac however only the matte set will install. The glossy profiles bring up an error stating that I do not have enough permissions to complete the install. I believe this was also a known issue in Lion and I have found one suggested solution which was to adjust permissions in Colorsync and Profile folders in the Library.

However, in Mountain Lion this did not work for me. Does anyone else have success in installing these profiles?

Apple increased security quite a bit more in Mountain Lion. In order to protect as many areas as possible, they also ended up blocking folders professionals need to get at. At least it's an easy fix.

Go to the /Library/ColorSync/ folder. Highlight the Profiles folder and press Command+I to bring up the Get Info dialogue fox. Expand the Sharing & Permissions arrow if necessary. By default, only the first of the three user names has Read/Write access. Click the padlock at the lower right and enter your admin password, then change the second and third user names to Read/Write. Close the Get Info box.

You'll now be able to copy your profiles into the folder without interference from the OS. Updates to OS X will likely set the permissions back to the defaults. A Repair Permissions probably would too, but you can change them back at any time.

Thanks for these suggestions. Kurt - I had tried the route you describe but met with a few strange occurences. Firstly there was nothing in my Profiles folder and I would have expected my successfully installed matte profiles to be there. Secondly I was surprised that I could access and change the permissions to both Profiles and ColorSync without entering a password! Even with permissions changed and ignoring how the location was going to work out the install still failed.

I have contacted Epson who acknowledge the problem and have promised to fix it. However it has now been 2 weeks with no further word from them.

I wonder if the R1900 puts the profiles elsewhere and I should edit permissions on those folders? I have now downloaded the official driver but that does not seem to add even basic profiles to Photoshop CS6.

Sounds like you're in the wrong Profiles folder. Not having to enter a password tells me you're looking at the Profiles folder in your user account, and not the one in the main Library folder. Not that you can't put the profiles in your user account Profiles folder, but then you're the only user who can access them.

With the Stylus Pro 4000 we previously owned, and our current 4900, Epson buries their profiles in the /Library/Printers/Epson/ folder. You just have to start looking through all of the subfolders and look for a folder named Profiles. Sometimes, it's not even that easy. That folder is often buried even deeper within one of the .plugin files. You have to right click on each one and choose "Show Package Contents" and then see if the profiles are in there.

I just used the Pacifist tool to peer into the Oct 4, Epson Printer Drivers v2.12 for OS X package. In particular, for the R1900, both sets of the ICC profiles are installed into the following paths. Supporting code for this printer is installed under the InkjetPrinter2 hierarchy.

/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/ICCProfiles/SPR1900_A.profiles/Contents/R esources

/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/ICCProfiles/SPR1900_W.profiles/Contents/R esources

The AutoSetupTool is installed in:

/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/AutoSetupTool/EPIJAutoSetupTool2.app

Everything in the above paths is owned by root with group admin. The individual R1900 .icc files are read/write by root, read-only by everyone else. There are two categories of .icc files for the R1900 as shown below:

Stylus Pro R1900 A Profiles

There should be a Library copy of the printer's PPD at /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/. Drag a copy of that file to your Desktop and open it. If you search for the lines beginning with *cupsICCProfile you should see the path to the installed profiles.

Thanks, Matt. Never thought of looking in the PPD for that info. Makes sense that it would be there since the printer would have to have some way of locating profiles in such a highly, non standard location.

My question on that has always been, why do they go so far out of their way to hide them? Profiles I can create myself are always far more accurate, so my first mission is to always delete all of the provided ones. That would be far easier to do if they were installed into the Profiles folder, where they should be.

Thanks Kurt, Matt and Viking OSX. Between you, you have helped to solve my problem. I was indeed in the wrong Library folder. I had thought I could simply use the alt-GO menu method when in fact this took me into the User/Library folders. Once I went through Go To Folder and found the main Library folder I then found I could change permissions and try my Glossy icc installation once more.

Weirdly it put them one level up from where I eventually found the matte ones. The path was: -

/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Epson Stylus Photo R1900. I found I had to change the permissions on the last folder and then drag and drop before I could finally see all the profiles in Photoshop.

It's very satisfying to sort this and I am VERY grateful for all your kind help. A big thank you!
