Lost Report

My husband recently wrote a lengthy report in AppleWorks, but when he came back to it there were only the first three lines there. When you double click on the name of the file it opens what appears to be an alias file which has #558D11 tacked on to the filename, and which exists in starting points: recent items. It looks like he may have inadvertently selected and deleted most of the report - but then he wouldn't have saved it like that, and why would it then open this oddly named file?

Is there any chance of recovering his report? He's using OS 10.6.8 on his MacBook Pro, AppleWorks 6.2.4.
