cannot turn off incoming mail sounds

I was having a similar issue and the problem ended up being that I have VMware Fusion running Windows on the same machine. So while I had turned off the sound notification on the Mac side, it was not turned off on the Windows side and was using the default system noise (basso). I had to turn off the sound for the notifications on both sides since I was getting the notification on both.

Same issue here, except its on my ipad. Turned mail sound to NONE, still get the sound. I have set Do Not Disturb and even muted all sounds and mail still makes that sound. So frustrated!

i think its a double whammy. not only do you have to turn off sound in mail but also

system preferences>notifications>mail>play sound when receiving notifications

annoying indeed. should be one or the other. apple, you listening?!

Are you using SpamSieve or some other program which checks your mail? SpamSieve certainly can play a sound whenever mail arrives, and it isn't affected by anything you can set in mail.app or System Preferences.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet? I'm running a MBP on 10.9.4. I have turned everything off for mail under notifications but am still getting the mail sound for every incoming mail message.

Any help would be appreciated.

Exactly the same happening to me. Absolutely maddening!

I will go to the Apple store today and have them take a look at that. Will let you know.

I was so concerned about the System Preferences > Notification setting that I forgot all about the Mail > Preferences setting. From within that window there is a "new message sound" drop down. After I set that to "none" I was all set.

Hi Mikibee... Try this: Mail / Preferences setting, from this window you will see (new message sound), set it to " none". Let me know if it worked for you.
