I try to open word & it gives a message. Does this for every program in the office suite. I can't even check for an update cause it won't let me. It shuts down before I can check

That's because the Microsoft updater is brain dead.
Office 2011 works fine on Mountain Lion. But it sounds like your install is hosed somehow. You'll probably need to re-install from the original source media and then run Microsoft Office Updater 9 or 10 times to get everything up to date.
In order to give you more accurate information, we need to know exactly what you're actually running. Your subject says Office 2010, but there is no Mac version of Office 2010. There's MS Office for Windows 2010, but for the Mac, there's Office 2004 (won't work on Mac OS X 10.7 or later), Office 2008 and Office 2011. The latter two should work fine in all recent Mac systems. What version do you actually have?
Also, your profile indicates that you're using Mac OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard), but you're posting in the Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) forum. If you're using Snow Leopard, you may get different answers, as Office 2004 will work for you while it won't work for Mountain Lion users.

You refer to your installation as "Office 2010". I know of Office 2008 for Mac, and Office 2011 for Mac.
If you are trying to run an Office 2011 updater on Office 2008, that won't work.
In that case, I would recommend completely uninstalling Office 2011 according to the instructions here:

Then download and install the trial version, which can be activated for full (non-trial) use with your product key.

I uninstalled the whole suite and reinstalled. I installed the updates and it started to open but stopped. Now, it won't open still! ***? I'm under the impression that Office 2011 doesn't work with mountain lion. I'll have to use textedit :-(
try setting up a new test user, log in as the new user and see if it works then, if it does you have something in your user library that is corrupt, maybe a Office Preference file
Nope. Didn't work. I'm just going to giveup. Microsoft knows there's a bug but they can't find it. They fail and now office 2011 is useless in mountain lion :-(

No bug here. We have over 200 Macs on mountain lion already and not one issue that you describe. So basically, it's not useless.
did you post your question to Microsoft's Mac forums as I suggested? They have MS appointed MVPs there to help.
Yep. Posted there. No response. like I said. This is useless. If not, then why doesn't it work? I've uninstalled everything several times. All registries, etc. like micrsoft asked in their removal instructions. It's unable to work, like our country during Obama administration.
How did you remove all "registries?" There is no registry on the Mac. Did you try uninstalling by following the directions at the Microsoft support link I posted, to the letter? If not, do so.
If you did, and had no luck, then you really need to take this to Microsoft's support forum, or call Microsoft support directly.
