How fast a connection needed for apple tv
I have a pre purchase question. Will apple tv play a movie if my Internet connection is 1 to 1.5 Mbps ?

It will play, but you will need to wait a little for it to start, longer for higher resolution.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
When you stated it will take a little time to start will it play normally after the wait ?
Or will it buffer in the middle ?
Currently when I visit a website that has a video clip, it takes a little to load but once it starts to play all goes ok until I get about half done then it starts to buffer which is frustrating. I was hopping that apple tv would fix this. I don't mind waiting for it to load as long as it will play normally once it does load. Thanks
Generally speaking it should play all the way through once it starts. It will calculate how much needs to be download before it can start and complete uninterrupted, unfortunately if your download speed is or becomes intermittent while downloading, this is going to cause problems.
Intermittent download speeds isn't something that Apple can do anything about.
Will the download speed effect the airplay ability of my iPad ?
If the download is intermittent would that also effect the airplay ability to watch a movie that is stored on a iPad or MacBook pro?
If I could at least use the airplay to watch my movie collection , then I could get the apple tv and use it for that purpose now. And in the future when I could upgrade my Internet connection to a higher speed I could use it for the 1000's of movies available on the Internet. Thanks
Only if you are using airplay in connection with internet streaming.
If you are airplaying content stored on either device then it is using the local network.
So if I understand you correctly the iPad would use the speed of the WiFi to connect to apple tv. And the Wifi's speed is determined by the routers speed and not the internet connection, if your are using AirPlay but if your getting the movie off the Internet the WiFi is slowed down to the speed of the Internet connection. Is this all correct ?
Basically. If using local content it's more about the strength of your local network and not speed. If you're streaming off the Internet and using AirPlay then you need to be concerned with both
