Is an eMac still usable?

I have a older eMac and a friends daughter needs a computer to do school work on. Can she use it?

At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, report the version of OSX from that window, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

briyny has a good point. Today's teenagers want to watch videos but most of the codecs use to upload video now use technology that does not support the outdated G4 PowerPC processor used in all eMacs.


My wife is still happy with her eMac, a 1.42Ghz (last model released) that has hardware support for one of the Mac OS's key video technologies, Core Image. Any lesser eMac does not support it.


That eMac shows some video choppiness but seldom ends up making a video look like a slde show. You have to use a thrid-party hack to see videos in FaceBook.


So we'll wait to here your answer to BDAqua's question about the machine specifics and we can go from there.


Our emac is still a great word processor and spreadsheet machine and my wife does a number of online forusn withour issue. However, that stuff may bore the socks off a young girl!
