where do you click "sync" in step 5?

On the extreme right of iTunes window scroll down to get the word Sync.

Be aware of something though - if you change the sync configuration - the Sync Button turns into Apply. If you make no changes to the sync configuration - meaning like you have added no new content from iTunes that you chose to sync - the button will say Sync. If you add more content from iTunes to put on the iPad - the button will say Apply.
