2011 Mac Mini with MDP to VGA adaptor doesn't work after reboot

I have a 2011 Mac Mini and the monitor I have connected to it only has a VGA connection so I got a MDP to VGA adaptor to make the connection. It works fine until I reboot the Mini and then I have no signal to the monitor. If I unplug the adaptor and the plug it back in I will get a picture.

How can I make it disply the picture after a reboot without having to unplug and then plug the adaptor back in?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

It's not a new problem, see > Apple issues Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter Firmware Update

Try > Resetting your Mac's PRAM, then if that doesn't help > Contact Apple Support and see if they can.

Resetting the PRAM did not help. I guess I'll get a hold of Apple Support.

Switch power button on monitor off. Wait 5 seconds. Power it back on. Even this is not 100% cure for this old issue.
