Can you get facetime on an iPad 1?

No. FaceTime will only work with the built in camera, and is not available for the original iPad.

Picking one up for my elderly parents, and with the refurb discounts currently available I thought it would be a good opportunity as not entirely convinced how they would take to it. If they take to their new toy as well as I hope the should then without question the iPad 2 would be the right option, but at the price I don't think I'd want to experiment on their adoption! They are very likely to have it on the coffee table and merely browse pictures of the grandchildren that I stream to them! At the refurb price, an experiment I am willing to make...

IPad 1 will become very cheap to be had and left behind at the same time....technology moves on....

You may want to consider that the upcoming iOS update (6), will not be available for the original iPad, and consequently new feature will not be available. Something to weigh against the cost factor.

Well, my iPod has the files for the Camera.app, and I successfully added that to my homescreen, so I don't see why Facetime wouldn't be buried somewhere.

Can't speak to what you see or think you see on an iPod. FaceTime is NOT available on the original iPad.

But you don't have a built in camera...how are you gonna FaceTime without that...best of luck on that one...lol
