Why can't I update my iPod touch to iOS 5?

I followed all the steps to upgrade to iOS 5 on my iPod touch. It keeps restoring the same 4.2.1 that I have. I'm about done with this thing and ready to buy some other product. What am I doing wrong?

Only the third-generation or fourth-generation iPod touch can run iOS 5. My guess is that you have a second-generation model for which iOS 4.2.1 is the last version available. You can confirm the model you have here:
