Greetings All;
Although the upgrade to Mountain Lion went without a hitch on all of my machines, since the upgrade my external firewire drives spin down when not in use.
They do spin back up after a few seconds when accessed. This obviously isn't a major issue...just wondering if anyone else has experience this. Any thoughts? All the best....

I don't have an answer, but I notice the same thing. My external HD do the same thing after going from Lion > ML. I now shut off one of my HD when not in use because when it begins to either spin down or on it can sometimes lock up the cpmputer for several seconds with the spinning ball.
At first I though it was my EHD with Time Machine getting ready to perform a backup.. But the backup would not occur. That's when I realized it was a different EHD spinning.

Thanks for the response! Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I have multiple FCP editing systems and a couple of iMac's for graphics work, so I've now begun only powering up the drives that I need for the day's current project. Interesting development. All the best...

Are you sleeping HDs? If so, don't. Which HDs? If they're WDs, then you need to disable their SmartWare which isn't. If they're other brands and you installed their software, you need to erase, reformat, and then recopy the data to them.
External Drives Spinning Down
