unable to modify colors in a mask (and pretty desperate!)

Hi everyone!
I'm a new Motion 5 user -a total rookie.
I'm trying to get a mask to desaturate a face (classic "demon face") but as soon as I complete the mask with the bezier tool it turns white (unlike in many tutorials where I can still see the face).
Next I try to add effects (such as desaturation) but nothing seems to affect the mask. It does affect my (whole) clone layer, but the mask remains white.

The same happens when I want to add generators from the library: the whole image gets the effect and I just can't make it apply to the mask only.

Any tips, please?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Looks like you are using the Shape tools instead of the Mask tools (just to the left)

When you say "to the left", you mean to the left of these tools below the canvas?

If so, I can't see any other ones. Maybe it's my interface setup?

I really apreciate your help. My FX editor has just vanished and I'm to submit a short film to a festival before Sept. 15th... and I'm just starting with Motion!!!

Sorry, to the right, my bad - the masking tools - to the right of the text tool.

Great! Thanks, this is starting to make sense. Now, if you new how I can apply a generator to the mask (rather than to everything) you'd safe a life 🙂.

Do you mean apply a mask to a generator? You can't do the opposite - just apply the mask directly to the layer you want to affect. It won't affect anything else.
