HELP! error message:%@ you cannot install Mac OS X on this volume

I was trying to reinstall some old applications that got erased on my MacBook after installing my computer restarted itself and shows the installer screen still with an error message:%@ you cannot install Mac OS X on this volume

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Is it an older Install Disc than the OSX version on it now?

Then can't without erasing or doing an Archive & Install, but what Apps exactly are they?
