speaker of iphone 4s won't work

My iphone will ring when a call is coming in but not alert me when a text comes in or play my music unless I use a headset. What's the problem?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

I had the same issue. Took my phone to the Apple Store and the Genius told me my thought it was docked. It was under warranty so they gave me a replacement.

GO to Settings-> Notifications-> Messages-> Sounds and turn it ON this is for iOS 9.1 In iOS 5 I guess it was called Notification Centre thats the only difference I suppose.
