I read somewhere if you mix cards (2 4gig and 2 8gig for ex), you put larger cards on top (closer to screen), and smaller in bottom bays (closer to the stand).
Any truth to this? I'm running a mid 2011 iMac 2.5 ghz core i5, 21.5"

That was the instruction for my iMac. Just consult your computer's user manual for help with adding memory.
I looked at the apple instructions and didn't see anything specific. =0(

I know of no reason why it should make any difference just as long as memory is installed in pairs. Use the upper slots for a single pair. Use the lower slots for additional pair.
