App store not installing updates

Whenever I try to update anything through app store, I just get 'waiting...' appear in the top right of the update box. The word 'update' is also greyed out so I can't click to start again. I've had this issue since I bought my mac last month. I need the loops that are available for garageband (1.0) and the new OS update (10.8.1) - help!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type this exactly as you see it here:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore

Click Go

Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.appstore folder to the Trash.

Now here:

~/Library/Preferences/

Click Go

Move these files from the Preferences folder to the Trash.

com.apple.appstore.plist

com.apple.storeagent.plist

Now here:

~/Library/Cookies

Click Go

Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.

Empty the Trash, launch the App Store and try updating.
