How can I quickly convert a very large ".RTF" file to Pages ?

Local Apple Support was unable to help. Anyone with the experience in being able to take a large RTF file and quickly getting it converted to a Pages file would be helpful. When converting to MSWord (on my MacBook Pro) the file would only open after 14-16 hours.

How large and exactly what is in this rtf file that it takes that long?

You are asking us to answer a question for which you have given no details.

How long is a piece of string? Can I play Beethoven's Fifth on a Gum leaf? What am I holding in my hand behind my back?

As fuhulda has said, Pages just opens rtfs. Drag it onto the Pages icon or right click > Open with > Pages

That is huge.

Must it be one document?

I can't see the point of putting that many contacts into an oversize Word/Pages document.

That is what Databases are for and they handle the size and access so much better.

Try NisusWriter which is a much more robust TextEditor, if the purpose is to clean it up and/or break it up.

Where did this come from and why would anyone create it?

For Jerrold & Peter,

Thanks for both your replies. Here's the background:

- Needed to convert roughly 8500 contacts from a database and my former IT dept. along with Blackberry told me that I needed to convert the export file to a .csv file then into an rtf file so that I could some how load this into Lotus Notes (Contacts module). ...so, hence my dilemma.

- Since I have both Pages & MSWord loaded onto my MacBook Pro I've tried them both and MSW did get it fully loaded up but, as I mentioned before when I started to scroll toward the end it started the process and then froze and eventually shut down.

Therefore, I'm not sure how I could separate the document (once up) and break it down into chunks without the document eventually shutting down again.

Note: the database was Goldmine by Front Range.

Note2: I'll check out the more robust editor you suggested.

Do you still have the original csv file? I believe after Lotus Notes 8.5.x, it allows csv import, rather than Lotus 1-2-3 .wk4 format, and without lifeforce reduction on .rtf manipulation.

Failing that, how much memory on the machine you are using? Have you downloaded and installed latest LibreOffice suite, then used LO Writer to read in the .rtf file? You will find that LibreOffice has more import/export functionality than either MS Word or Pages.
