I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now cannot use my Airport Utility app. It tells me I need Airport Utility 5.6 now, but when I try to download it, it tells me that Mountain Lion does not support version 5.6
Does this mean I need to by a new Airport Base Station?

No, but in order to install AirPort Utility v5.6 you will need to use a program, like Pacifist, to extract it from the disk image (.dmg) file. Once extracted, it will run just fine on Mountain Lion.
I had the same problem, until I downloaded Pacifist app for Mac and pulled the 5.6 app out and extracted it to my desktop, then moved it into my Applications folder. It works fine on my Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, and it took me a total of 5 minutes.
You can do the job also without any tools.
Can you use the trial version of Pacifist or do you have to get the $20 version?

I have used this means to enable an old airport express to be added (again) to my network. So i have 5.6.1 installed, as per a third party installer (i used pacifist).
Now, though, when i attempt to open 5.6.1 directly i get a message saying i can't use it with this version of OS-X (i am now using 10.9.4).
Any suggestions how we get past this latest obstacle?
