Mar 28, 2016 6:16 PM in response to Gregory247by jimmckay,I was having the same sort of issues and just discovered that if I set the brightness to about 75% via the displays panel and unplug/replug it I don't have trouble anymore. Seems like the backlight is going bad and can't keep the 100% brightness going. Or perhaps a firmware issue.. The firmware updates refuse to run on my MacBook though.
You can check whether it's a backlight issue by shining a bright flashlight (or iPhone) directly into the screen in dim lighting. If you can see pixels, it's the backlight.

Jun 18, 2016 5:57 PM in response to Gregory247by CnSntrk,i had the same problem with my display for aprox a year. but only with my MacBook Pro 2011. The other laptops are working fine.
* MacBook Pro 2011: problems
* MacBook Air 2016: working great
* MacBook Pro Retina 15 2016: working great.
for the MacBook Pro 2011 i have a simple solution: don't put it to sleep mode!
Whenever i attach the 2011 Laptop to the Monitor, i restart the laptop (no joke! ). Then i changed the "Display sleep"->"Never" in "Preferences > Energy Saver", if the system is on "Power Adapter".
Never had the effect ever since.

Jul 20, 2016 12:37 PM in response to Gregory247by scottsmi,I had the same issue, screen not turning on, even if plugged into different port on surge protector. The magsafe power supply not delivering any power to my laptop. I'd had flickering problems for over a year.
BUT... I didn't need to buy a new power supply. Plugging directly into the wall, bypassing the surge-protector (belkin) made everything work again. I don't even have flickering any more. If you have these problems, try this first!
