What is a patch cable?

I have a router that I want to connect a Time Capsule to. Before I buy, what is the difference between a patch cable and a regular ethernet cable? I have noticed that the patch cable is much cheaper though. Can someone answer my question in a way that a non-tech person could understand? Thank you.

Patch cable is (in this context) an ethernet cable. Premade.. and using stranded wire so it is flexible.. where the ethernet wire in the wall is solid core. But you can interchange use.. they are the same thing.. but made for different purpose.. patch is short.. usually less then 10M and has poorer characteristics than solid core.. that makes it only suitable for short not long runs.
