Q: Contradictory Instructions

In this article it says, "Recovery is not needed to install and run OS X" yet when I attempt to install Mountain Lion there are no options other than "Restart" (without installing).... Anyone else stuck? Seems that reformatting the harddrive is the only way to get the update I paid for, what a poor experience.

What article?

You do not want to reformat unless you have a couple good backups.

Update preserves all your user data and settings.

If you downloaded ML then the restart will run the ML installer (update.)
