Did you ever figure out the problem ?

I am running 10.8 , with the retina update for Iphoto. Everytime i try to delete a picture, it wont even send to trash , then when I try to close app , app freezes , all i get is the circle thing , then switch screens, so I can force quit, because I am unable to use anything on the screen Iphoto is running on

If you have the same problem (no one can tell from the tota lack of infornation in your post) although I doubt it, then the same answer applies

Can I just say how ridiculous it is that Apple would not have long ago fixed this sophomoric bug in one of their marquis programs.

I mean really. You put stuff in the trash, then want to empty the trash. A function that's been used at the OS level since the beginning. And they can't make it work in iPhoto???

Shame on Apple.

Makes them vulnerable to a company actually attentive to their software.

That's aquestion you'll need to ask Apple, and they aren't here. It's all explained in the Terms you agrred to when you signed up.

Do you use the Rating system in your library? If not then here's an easy way to get your photos back into the library, grouped together and then deleted in smaller batches of 100 or so.

1 - select all of the photos in the Trash bin and give them a 5 star rating - right click on the selected photos and select the 5 start rating.

Note: iPhoto 9 (11) won't let one drag photos to an album or add a keyword to them. Thus the need to use the rating system.

2 - select all of the photos in the Trash bin and drag onto the Events icon above it.

3 - create a Smart Album with the criteria My Rating is 5 star.

4 - select batchs of 100 or so photos in the Smart Album and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move them to the Trash bin.

5 - empty the iPhoto trash bin and the one in the Dock.

6 - repeat Steps 4 and 5 until all photos have been delete.

Thank you for your suggestion. I've seen it in other discussions.

I've been using iPhoto for many years. I've been using a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 2007 era iMac the whole time. I'm now using iPhoto v8.1.2.

My iPhoto library is now quite large with about 40,000 photos and about 175 G in total size. I have put a lot of time into organizing the photos. Everything is religiously backed up.

Over the past year or so the performance of iPhoto in terms of speed has been slowly declining. It takes a long time to open, but the most cumbersome is the spinning beach ball when I "commit" to enhancements to a photo I've made (contrast, saturation, sharpness etc). Recently that beach ball could actually take 3-5 minutes. I find this intolerable.

So I started researching this to see if others have the problem. As best I can make out after a few hours of research is that my library is too large and my computer too old. I don't want to replace my computer becuase of iPhoto so I started researching the idea of splitting my library into smaller libraries.

I found several 3rd party programs (iPhoto Buddy, iPhoto Library Manager) that made it seem they may be able to help me easily split my library into several libraries. Unfortunately neither actually does this but instead tells you how you need to do that manually.

The methods to split your library manually they suggest are horrendously tedious for a 40,000 photo library with over 1,000 carefully constructed Events.

And this brings me to where I stand today. I copy my entire library to an external hard drive, open the copied library and what I WANT to do is prune it to say 1/10 of the size (say two years of my photos). (Realize I'll have to do this process of copying my entire library 10 times, and pruning each time.)

But then I find out that iPhoto totally chokes when you try to trash more than "80-100" photos at a time! Morever, I come to find out that emptying the trash of even 80 photos takes 3-5 minutes!

Although I appreciate the help and advice, perhaps you can understand my frustration with Apple. I'm literally an indentured servant to iPhoto if I want to preserve all the work I've done on my library. I'd switch to another program if it would preserve all my events but I can not find one that does.

1. The performance of their software declines with no warning to the point where it can't be used unless you're unemployed and have nothing else to do.

2. You look for a fix and find you have to split your library.

3. When you try to split your library you find it will takes days and days of tedious work to complete.

So that is my story. That is why I'm so angry with Apple.

Have I missed anything or am I doomed to this dreary work?

How much free space do you have on your boot drive and how much memory do you have. Both can affect the speed of applications as well as the system.

Hi I have about 17,000 pix in my iphoto trash. I have done what you have mentioned above but when I create a new album to transfer my trash into...Iphoto wont let me move these pix to the new album...?? I have also highlighted all the pix to create a new album but the icon to create a new album is "grey" and non-clickable?

Quite frustrating as I bought a new mac and transfered all my pix over to new iphoto but hit a glitch and for some reason all my "event" names were gone and most of my events either tripled or quadrupled...so now when trying to go thru all the 195,000 pix arrrrr I have 17,000 in the trash so far but can't get rid of them...help please.

You imported one Library to another.

Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

Do you still have the old machine or the old library?

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...

But however you do choose to link the two machines...

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.

Then launch iPhoto. That's it.

This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

I strongly suggest you follow TD's suggestion as you'll never get all of the duplicates out of your library in a timely manner without losing some mental capacity.

This technique worked well for me and as far as I can see is the only one that will work for the latest version of iPhoto. Thanks OT.
