I had the same problem today when I tried to erase two jpeg files on a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex (1 TB) external hard drive. First I got the error code 36. When I tried to backup the contents of the entire folder (except for the two corrupted files) to the computer's hard drive, I got error code 8058. After rebooting, I ran Restore in Disk Utilities and the problem was corrected. Disk Utility removed the two problem files from the drive and stored them in a separate folder.

I had Error code 36 as well for slightly different reasons mine was every time I attached my external hard drive I had a file in my Trash which I could net delete I just went to Disk Utility highlighted the Disk in question and went to first aid and repair disk this has cured the problem at least me me maybe it might also work for you Richard

i faced same problem of error code-36, i found that some files it is not reading so i left those files and copied rest.

My error code -36 turned out to be because I was trying to drag a folder onto an external drive that had only 1.5G of space left.

Problem with Finder. Use Terminal with copy command

cp -Rv [sourse folder/file] [destination folder] - may to use dag-and-drop

-v - verbose mode

-R - if sourse file - is a Folder

I've gone through this thread and couldn't find the solution I'm about to post. Sorry if someone did and I missed it.

Simply, if you get this error, all you need to do is format the external drive to Mac OSX Extended Journaled. This will stop the error. This really is a better file format for macs and much more compatible with them.

Most external drives some formatted to ExFAT these days. This allows them to work both for Mac and Windows. However, this isn't optimal for Macs. So, if you have an external drive that you just bought from somewhere and you want to use if as a backup drive, that will only be used on a mac, then it's a good idea to re format it to Mac OSX Extended Journaled. NOTE, formatting the drive will delete it's contents and by formatting to Extended Journaled, it won't work for Windows anymore. Keep that in mind. It should however, fix your issue.

Error 32 is a very common error apparently due to file naming issues when copying especially with external drives used for Windows systems NTFS and Mac. Hopefully Apple will realise that many users like myself live in a multi computer, multisystem world. We need to be able to move more easily between one and the other.

i was an idiot and didn't plug my USB cord all the way into my computer, my CF card became disconnected, and when i went to try and transfer my data again i received the error -36 message.

for most cases i think just turning the computer off and back on again will fix it. unplug everything to get the gremlins and bad mojo out of the cords. power up and then plug the CF card back in. i was able to avoid a minor heart attack and lots of explanation using this method.

I just ran into this issue on OS X 10.11.6. OS X was saying that my external drive was failing and to backup my data and erase the hard drive I hunted high and low for a solution and tried everyone's suggestion of using DiskWarrior (v5) it ran for over 50 hours staying stuck on Step 5 and had over 20k in bad blocks and climbing. All I was trying to do was get my data off that external hdd so I came across one more program called Carbon Copy Cloner (Http://bombich.com) and it works! It gave me a couple of error messages warning me about the status of my drive and I proceeded with the cloning of my drive to a new external hdd and it was able to transfer my data to the new external hard drive where the data is once again USEABLE! Hope this helps someone who might be looking for a solution to this error 36 and is trying to recover their data before completely writing it off! Cheers.
