i created a video on imovie for my girlfriend, but when i sent her the video over email she couldnt play it on her laptop, ( probably because she doesnt have a mac, she only has a windows 7 laptop ) so i was wondering is there any way you can convert the video to a format where she will be able to play it on her computer after sending it to her over email?

if there is can someone give me a guide? or tell me in a few simple steps how to do it?

QuickTime for Windows is here:

In addition to Klaus' suggestion, you might also consider sharing your movie to YouTube. That may allow you to upload a higher resolution version of your movie than will fit in an email. You can password protect your movie so that it's not available to the public.

In iMovie choose Share>YouTube.

MPEG Streamclip will convert most formats to AVI. It is a free app available for both Mac and Windows, and can be downloaded from the developer Squared 5 here: http://www.squared5.com

Open the file with MPEG Streamclip (or drag it into the workspace) and select File>Export to AVI from the menu. Leave all settings as they appear in the export window and click Make AVI in the bottom right corner of the window.

EDIT: Noticed that a conversion I just tested had no audio in the exported file. The original movie (.MOV) is in H.264 format with AAC audio. Not sure what the problem is unfortunately. Anyway, give it a try using MPEG Streamclip - you may have better success!

Just discovered the problem. Audio does not play in QuickTime Player X, nor in QuickTime 7. But it does play in VLC 2.app - so perhaps a 3rd party component is required to enable the movie to play with audio in QuickTime.

VLC Media Player is available for download here (free and cross platform): http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

That sounds like a good solution. Strange that people don't want QuickTime, as it's widely used on the internet and elsewhere.

I tested playing an AVI file recorded by my wife's Canon digital still camera. That played fine in QuickTime, including the audio. But I'm still not sure why the MPEG Streamclip exported file played without audio in QuickTime.

AVI is simply a container which can contain different video formats, much like .mov files. So, not all AVI files are alike, of course. Anyway, good to hear that your colleague was able to play the video clip using QuickTime for Windows.

most probably, both persons can watch YouTube on their machines. 😉

(and: 'avi' stands for many people for 'video file', but is an obsolete media-wrapper, no 'format')

ok, from iMovie, that simple, no 3rd party tools involved, just some clicky-dee-click:

• Share/Export using Quicktime

• from the drop-down, select mpeg4

• click Options, in the next menu

• select h264, 1280x720, 4-6000 kbps

=> creates a mp4 with 'Youtube standards', playable on any Windows, Linux, PlayStation3, Xbox, whatever .......
