There are 5 new threads a day about downloading Windows support.
Sounds like you read one of the tips about some things we felt might help (along with disable or don't use Norton, LittleSnitch or other 3rd party firewalls).

I'm using a clean install of Snow Leopard. No 3rd party apps whatsoever.
Why do we have to jump through hoops to get this working? Has Apple stopped supporting Boot Camp? Have the servers been down for all this time?
It is so bad and broken - except it has never worked or been reliable and there is it seems no real attempt to resolve. downloads have been like this since Lion when it was mandatory, and back to 10.6.6 when it was more a preview beta test feature added to Boot Camp.
Some have posted links to download. At one time there was just one universal package for all macs, then it went to "OEM" and to specific model somehow so you can't use your friend Joe's' ESD package.
I still like the DVD of course. And with Lion I would make sure to save and create your own installer (DVD or 8GB flash memory).
Of course everyone should send feedback and make a suggestion. I probably used my quota. I'd like to see a small "Windows support control panel" on the Mac as a package, small 1-2MB, that would then from inside Windows pull down the current package. Software Update for Windows. You still might need special driver for that Mac to boot from USB-DVD or USB-Flash to boot the installer. But even that is small..
It should take minutes to download 600-900MB package.
Was able to get it from one of the many torrent websites. Since it's basically a set of drivers I assume it's completely legal to do so.
Apple get your act straight!
