Sparse bundle already in use

I get this error message when I try to back up my IMAC to my time capsue using Time Machine. " The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/ iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use." What can I do? Before this happened, I had to shut down the computer because the back up was locking up my computer and I could not access files or even get my computer to respond. after it rebooted my IMAC works, but the back up doesn't and apparently was not backing up most of the day, since it says the last back up was at 8 am this morning and it is supposed to back up hourly. HELP

Having posted your question.. see the more like this just to the right on the menu.. this question is asked 10 times a day.. search here is hopeless but it is simple.

You need to reboot the TC.. maybe reboot the network.. thus is the quality of apple networking now.

â„č Or... In Mountain Lion, click on your Time Capsul in the AirPort Utility, then click on the 'Edit' button at the lower right. Click on the Internet button at the top, then click on the 'Renew DHCP Lease' button. The light should go yellow as it releases all the users and renews, and then it will go green. Then go into Time Machine and try backing up again. Hopefully that will get you back up and running. 🙂

😕 What does concern me is that Time Machine now indicates my oldest backup is 'None.' After it finishes backing up, it shows the oldest backup again. I am not sure why this is the case, but so long as it is not actually lost.

Good luck!

I have a client who has been experiencing these issues frequently in the last few weeks. It seems to work great for about a week to a week and a half, then boom we have to restart the TC. While all of the suggested methods (i.e. disconnect users, power cycle or restart TC) work, they still do not answer why this is happening. This needs a solution, not a quick fix. Any thoughts? The console output borders on useless regarding pointing me in any direction as to what is occuring.

Just wanted to add that, until this gets fixed, you do not have to power-cycle the Time Capsule. Just use the AirPort Utility and select Restart from the Base Station... menu once you have the device selected. Doing it this way gives the device a chance to cleanup and close open file handles before restarting. Much safer that the "surprise" of a power restart.
