OK - not sure what actually cnsistutes a 'crash report' so - at random - would that be this:

Wow. I think it s safe to say that the result of that was to list many thousands of files... it just kept scrolling on and on. I have retained the results if they are of any value...

Well I did all that and I am afraid it appears to have changed nothing.

I do understand what you were doing there with the chown and chflags. But I am puzzled by the fact that you suggested the command will take a 'noticeable amount of time'. In fact it took about 15 seconds before returning the prompt.

Likewise the 'apply to all enclosed items' didn't appear to take any time at all although I am not actually sure how you can tell that.

I performed the 'find' command as well and am still getting what looks like the entire contents of my user folders - some 238,000+ items! And the console is still churning out log files at high speed.

is there a 'stage 2' by any hopeful chance? 🙂

[Update] if you understand these things, would a crash report from one of the not-responding apps (like 'Secutiry/Privacy' pref panel or the App Store) be any use to paste in here? and is it worth noting that to date the ONLY apps I have these problems with are Apple apps. I have seen no problems with third party apps at all.

Interestingly I now notice that the vast majority of the list is centered on 3 folders - including the ./Sites/ folder with the other two being folders where I store archived material.

Is that enough or would you like some more?

Well that certainly limited the 'find' task to a couple of dozen lines - all folders!

But has sadly changed nothing else. Still have apps dying and still have reams of console entries - including that recurring set every 10 seconds....

I should have mentioned this earlier but I only just remembered it when I re-booted. I don't know if it might be relevant...

I had asked about the apps not responding on a different thread. (here in fact: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4224654?answerId=19345480022#19345480022. )The first suggestion was to re-install Mountain Lion which I duly did.

The second suggestion was to delete some preferences and they had me create a root user which I did although not totally happily. Anyway - that also failed to fix anything and put the preference file back. But - the interesting thing is that if I try and log in now as 'root' (and I DO remember the password 🙂 ) it fails. Gives that little unhelpful jiggle.... Relevant?

That's a little hard to do as the window is filling up pretty quickly but I will give it a go. Not sure how much data you want but let's try this:

FIRST: These are getting dimped into the console window as mor eor less a batch. These get repeated every 20 seconds or so as a group of 6 entries:

SECOND: So cleared the console window again and tried to open the app store application. As far as I can tell these were then dumped in bit I may have missed something in the rush! This is a group of 5 entries:

No - there was no folder named 'Accounts'. I created it and rebooted again just in case.

I am getting the same group of repeating 6 log entries but there are a few new ones scattered here and there while I was watching the console window - 2 groups of 2...

1 - Persistent UI failed to open file file://localhost/Users/andy/Library/Saved%20Application%20State/com.apple.Conso le.savedState/window_1.data: No such file or directory (2)

Also got this when I opened textEdit ot paste the abivbe into:

Do I need to set some specific permissions to this Accounts folder. It remains empty...
