mac ejects cd after inserting

My MacBook (late 2008; 13"; running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1) ejects an audiobook CD a few moments after I insert it. The DVD/CD drive works since it accepts movie DVDs, however it ejects an audiobook CD. The audiobook CD runs fine in my wife's mac, but not mine. She is using OS X 10.5.8. (The CD is clean and has no scratches.) Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
