did XQuartz work for any one who used it as a sub for x11

Yes. I had been using Inkscape (requires X11) on Snow Leopard; when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, apparently Apple stopped providing an X11 interface with OSX. After submitting a bug report to the Inkscape developers, I got back the resolution to install and use XQuartz. I did so and Inkscape works well now in Mountain Lion.

I have used it successfully with a program called Dia.

Apart from a display problem with the emacs from macports everything works fine. In fact, copying back and forth between X and OSX now works better.
