Color in X11 and terminal.app

Hi,

May i ask what is the best way to switch on the color labelling in the terminals of X11 and terminal.app?

Currently, I have the following lines in the .bashrc file:

TERM='xterm-color'
export TERM
CLICOLOR='true'
export CLICOLOR

Well, both xterm and terminal.app did display color after that. However, there is something odd. The colors displayed in xterm seemed to be very pale, much suited for a black background, while the ones displayed in terminal.app seemed to be normal (i.e. more suited to a white background).

Why is that the two terminals display different levels of colors? The linux machines at work seemed to have the same setting, but xterm is displaying darker colors that is suited for white background.

I actually would like to put terminal.app in black background and X11 xterm in white background. Hence, the current color scheme is just the reverse of what I want. Is there a better way to set the color schemes? It would be best if i can set the color schemes separatly for xterm and terminal.app.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you very much.

here are 2 options that you can play with. see the manpage for more.

xterm(1)

-bg color
This option specifies the color to use for the background of
the window. The default is ``white.''

-fg color
This option specifies the color to use for displaying text.
The default is ``black.''

for a list of the known color names.
showrgb(1) - uncompile an rgb color-name database

Just for fun.

use the Digital Color Meter in the Utilites folder to get close to the colors
used by the Terminal.app. but appears to be a bit dimmer than those in the terminal, at least on my screen.

RGB As Hex Value, 8-bit

to build your own colors, edit the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt, specify
the values for Red, Green and Blue. then give it a name.
