yeah you just might need to have a sim card in it so that it does not continue to give you the no sim card message but on of the other people can give you a better answer to this question

thanks but i dont have a sim card. can you buy a sim card or do you have to buy a service plan to get one?
Just borrow a SIM card from someone else's phone or get a disabled one.
you dont need a sim card, unless youve reset the phone back to factory settings, but if you have you can go to an apple store and have them start it up with a dummy sim.
thank you ill try that
i found an old sim card from a different phone and i no longer get the sim error message. it wont restore. there isnt an error code or anything it just says it cant continue with activation and says to check back later. i dont even want to activated. just want to use it as an ipod
Yes, you can use the iPhone as an iPod as many have said, you just need a sim card for the phone's carrier. So if the phone was used actively through At&t, us an At&t sim card. It does not need to be an active card. They sell sim cards for any carrier on ebay for a little over $2.00 all day long. Or you can stop and get one from the At&t or Verizon store etc...The one thing I did not see mentioned in these posts and it confused me when I first used my iPhone as an iPod. Is that you will see "No Service" in the upper left next to the WiFi symbol. That just means no cell phone service.
You have just replied to a Thread almost 2 years old ................................I am sure patricia is grateful
