can i use an old iphone as an ipod without a sim card?

my dad got an iphone 3g from a friend that didnt want it. it doesnt have a sim card. i dontvwant to activate the phone but would like to use it as an ipod. is it possible?

yeah you just might need to have a sim card in it so that it does not continue to give you the no sim card message but on of the other people can give you a better answer to this question

Yes, you can use the iPhone as an iPod as many have said, you just need a sim card for the phone's carrier. So if the phone was used actively through At&t, us an At&t sim card. It does not need to be an active card. They sell sim cards for any carrier on ebay for a little over $2.00 all day long. Or you can stop and get one from the At&t or Verizon store etc...The one thing I did not see mentioned in these posts and it confused me when I first used my iPhone as an iPod. Is that you will see "No Service" in the upper left next to the WiFi symbol. That just means no cell phone service.
