How to convert .dvdproj to .mov? Trying to load to YouTube.

You will need to save the iDVD project as a TS_Folder, then 'reverse engineer' it.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :

(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))

which is a mere $20.

Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:

For the benefit of others who may read this thread:

Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

If you are running Lion:

From the MPEG Streamclip homepage

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.

To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.

The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

Once you open mpegStreamclip it is self-explanatory. 🙂

your first reply has solved my problem brilliantly!!!!

I had put together a project in iMovie for my in-law's 40th wedding anniversary which I then exported to idvd.

I had trouble burning on DVD and just found out that the project was way too large to burn. This created a problem as in the meantime I had 'lightened the imovie load' by deleting evertything but the 'master' project. Learnt a huge lesson. Thanks to you I was able to re-import the idvd content as .dv following the steps you suggested. Thank you so much!

I am going to follow your directions on converting my archived iDVD project to a file format that will allow me to upload to You Tube. This is an iMovie I created a few years ago, all original. Unfortunaly I have lost some of the files in the project and now can not access the iMovie. Finding your post makes me very hopeful!

Question: There are two options for converting (your second step) at mpegStreamclip I want to be sure I download the correct one. version 1.9.2 or 1.9.3b beta. I work with iMAC OS x 10.6.8.

I am always a bit wary of beta (not quite finished, still testing) versions, so I would stick with 1.9.2 - works perfectly for me!

update Klaus. When I try to same my file in the MPEG Streamclip to MPEG 2 play back a window pops up stateing

"You must install the MPEG-2 Playback Component before trying to export MPEG2 files! You can buy it online from Apple"

I did purchase and install (it is in my applications folder)...so, what to try next?
