Bluetooth not available! Already tried SMC and Pram reset!

I just got a new Macbook pro Retina display and after a simple restart the bluetooth has gone. Already tried SMC and Pram reset and it is still not available.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

Might be corrupted preferences ...

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy / paste: /Library/Preferences

Click Go then move the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.

Then try System Preferences > Bluetooth

Make sure On and Discoverable are selected.

I had the same problem. First my Macbook Pro Retina wouldn't find my Apple bluetooth keyboard. They the Blutooth preferences menu disappeared from the System Preferenes list all together.

I deleted the .plist file as noted by Carolyn Samit, reopened System Preferences, and still no luck. A soft restart didn't make a difference. I think shutdown the system and powered it back up, and it's all fine now.

Seems like the power cycle reset the Bluetooth interface. All fine now.

I've had this problem for about six months and I've never been able to fix it. I've literally sat for hours looking through posts on google about Bluetooth on MacBook Pros becoming unavailable or disappearing. I tried almost everything (even reinstalled OS). I was starting to believe that this has to be a bluetooth hardware issue. Either the Bluetooth chip was defective in all these MacBooks or I some how broke it. I didn't think at all that it could still be a software issue after all that I've tried. I think I was wrong because...

I finally tried the most simple thing that finally FIXED my Bluetooth on my MacBook Pro.

All you have to do is...

1) shutdown the MacBook

2) once its off, hold down the power button for at least 20seconds. I was told that you'd hear a loud beep but mine didn't do anything. Not even the white led on the front turned on.

3) if you had the same results, let go of the power button and now press and hold the power button again. This time, the white led should turn on and flash right before the gray screen and apple logo appears. Continue to hold the power button (just to make sure it works) and let go a few seconds after the spinning wheel under then apple logo appears.

4) now check if your Bluetooth is back

This surprisingly worked for me. I've never seen someone suggest this solution before, so I'm posting this for anyone else that has tried everything else and has finally given up.

This may be a temporary fix because mine did go back to being unavailable after a restart. The Bluetooth works perfectly as long as you don't restart. If you do restart, just do the same thing again and the Bluetooth should be back.

Please reply if this fixed your Bluetooth problem!

I can't believe it. It worked. I had installed an OS security update to 10.6.8 and lost 2 trackpads and my keyboard. I did a bunch of things including zapping PRAM. The system wouldn't even see my keyboard half the time so I would have to pull batteries then put them back and then the system would see them. Occasionally I would get to the screen where I had to type in numbers but I never could type the numbers because the keyboard was unresponsive. It even said the keyboard was paired, even though it was completely unresponsive.

This did the job like a dream.

I can't believe that I had to waste 2 hours on making a keyboard work, when a wired keyboard automatically works. What a total joke. This is so fundamental.

Thanks for saving me.

Same problem here on late 2011 Intel iMac.

Worked fine for months after always updating to latest versions of OS X not long after they are released.

Turned iMac off for 4-5 days while I went on vacation about a week ago, and when I came back I was having this issue.

Also tried deleting preferences file, resetting PRAM, SMC reset, unplugging USB devices, and problem still exists.

Wondering if I actually have a hardware problem, or if upgrading to Yosemite will work?

Unhappy customer.

@dfeivelson I have the same problem as you (September 2011 iMac). About 3 months ago my bluetooth keyboard and mouse stopped working and then I noticed the dreaded line through the Bluetooth icon at the top of the screen. I have tried all of the suggestions (as have you) but no luck. I was going to do a restore but then thought might as well wait for Yosemite. Updated to Yosemite this morning and STILL no Bluetooth. Very frustrating as my USB ports are now being tied up with wired keyboard and mouse and my Trackpad sits idle in the drawer.

Beginning to think it might be hardware related ???😟 and an expensive visit to Apple will be required.

I tried restoring from a time machine back up to an earlier date when Bluetooth still worked and then the Bluetooth icon was completely missing so don't waste your time trying that... restoring back now to my most recent backup, but found the post below that I am going to try when it is done restoring in another two hours or so, but maybe you can try it now and tell me if it works:

"

I hope I can help, at least with anyone else who may completely lose the bluetooth for no reason. I had the same problem, trackpad and keyboard didnt work, checked systems report, and no information was found under Bluetooth.

I called an apple support number, the guy had never heard of this happening but we corrected everything on the first try.

Try this; Apple Icon upper left screen/shut down.

Disconnect everything from the computer but the power

Once the computer is off, hold down SHIFT/CONTROL/OPTION and then press the power button. Hold all 4 keys for 5-6 seconds and release.

The computer should still be off at this point.

Cross you fingers and press the power button.

Once the computer powers up and you sign in, check to see if the bluetooth icon is now back in Systems Preferences.

It worked for me and all my devices were listed.
