Death in the family - iPad unlock?

I have a fairly strange question, but one that I'm sure some people have had to deal with. My girlfriend had a death in the family. This person had an iPad with the password lock turned on. Is there any way to unlock the device without erasing everything? Unfortunately, I'm sure this kind of scenario could be used by thieves trying to use a stolen device so it seems like Apple might not be quick to unlock it. I just don't even know where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that was used to sync with so that you can restore the app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.

Instructions can be found here.

You will probably have to use recovery mode.

You can restore using the computer the iPad was last backed up to by starting iTunes on the computer, attach the USB end of the cable, then while holding the home button on the iPad connect the dock connector end of the cable to the iPad. That puts it in recovery mode, and proceed to then restore from the last backup. That will remove the passcode and restore all the content in the last backup that was performed.

You can try to call Apple support to get a temporary password to his iCloud account in hopes that he had his iPad backing up to iCloud. If he was setup to backup to iCloud, then you could reset teh device, and restore from iCloud, so you don't really lose anything. This is a long shot, as this method could be abused, but they might allow you to do a password reset over the phone based on teh circumstnaces...

Any further updates? I have a similar situation - I had given my old iPad to my Dad to use in hospital and he died. I went to set it up for my step-brother and lost the piece of paper with Dad's password. Now it is locked. I dont care about erasing anything - there was hardly anything on it. I just want to be able to use it again so I can give it to my step-brother. I tried that restore process and that didnt work - even though it was my laptop that the iPad was last set up with.
