I am just a bit confused about the term 'all flash architecture'. What does this terms actually mean. Does it include sticking a SSD into a hard drive bay or does it refer to a specific faster, more permanent type of memory?
I notice the new models that have this 'all flash architecture' have a small chip instead of a 2.5" SSD, however it is still connected via a SATA connection. Is this faster than a normal SSD?
No it is not any faster. It is a SSD as all SSDs are Flash Memory. It's just in a different package designed to fit into the smaller space available with this new Mac notebook, Retina model.
So if I stuck a SSD in my 2010 MacBook, I could say I have all flash architecture?
Yes and No. Your model can still have a Spinning HDD in it. The Retina model Can Not.
Your Mac has a DVD drive inside it, the retina doesn't.
You can call anything in the world whatever you want. That doesn't make it so.
I know this is a bit different, but with the RAM in the models where it is soldered straight onto the logic board, what are the performance benefits of this? What is the speed of this RAM?
None. It was done for space requirement. No RAM sockets/slots uses less space. They can place the RAM wherever they want/need as the available space allows.
