designjet 120 mountain lion

According to the excerpt below from the HP Support site, the "HP Designjet 120" printer is NOT supported in Lion or Mountain Lion:

"Review the following list for Designjet products and product series that are supported in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, OS X 10.7 Lion, and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

NOTE:The following model names and numbers reference the HP printer series, which vary by worldwide region. They might not match the specific name and number on your printer.

• HP Designjet 30

When a manufacturer drops support for a printer or other peripheral, it means that they will no longer answer any questions about it or push drivers for it through Apple Software Update. Older drivers on their website may or may not work in later systems.

Option 1:

I would recommend that you try reinstalling the drivers from the HP web site and try adding your printer again. That may or may not work, or you may only have partial functioning of your printer. If it doesn't work, you can uninstall the HP drivers. Their installer also contains an option to uninstall.

Option 2:

Use the drivers from OpenPrinting.org. It will take a bit of work to get all the piece in place. First download and install Foomatic-RIP and Ghostscript. Next, you will need to add a PPD for your printer. You can get that here. You will need to modify the PPD to overcome a conflict with Foomatic-RIP and OS X. Remove the following line from the PPD--

*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-pdf 0 foomatic-rip"

You can then place the PPD in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources and then add your printer.

Option 3:

Use the commercial driver called Print Fab.

I had the same issue and found this, thanks for posting. I installed the driver for the Design Jet 130 from the HP website for Mountain Lion and it seems to be working ok for me at the moment, I'll post if I come across any issues.

It works ok for me, not 100%, not sure colours are coming out exactly right or it could just be the age of the printer. You should bring your computer to the printer (if it's portable) and test to be sure you're happy with the functionality. They're heavy printers to return!

The seller said that I can do a test print whilst I'm there, but I doubt that I will be able to check the functionality etc. as I have never used a hp printer before, let alone a large format. Would you mind telling me what it is that's lacking?

Also, would you recommend the printer? I need it for my studies (postgraduate architecture student) so it will be in heavy use and the prints need to be of decent quality as they will be presentation pieces. I'm not expecting gallery standard photo prints, but at least decent enough composite drawings which may include some renderings, photos, line drawings etc.

I use it for the same purposes. The line drawing and image quality is quite good. The cartridges last well too but I usually outsource large number batch A1 prints. I'm sure the quality of newer printers is likely to have improved... the cartridges lasting may not have improved!

I bought it originally to double up as a proofing printer for graphics but the proofing software hasn't been suported for a long time. I can't tell exactly what may be missing in functionality, it has the same print dialogue most printers have, paper size, A1 or A1 on a roll, paper type etc. I didn't get the roll feed at the time which I regret as it's difficult to source now and loading each page is a bit of a pain.

If you have a sample composite drawing, try printing it there. If you're happy with the quality, what more would you want? I can check anything specific if you want.

Maybe someone else might share their experience here?

Frankly I find it strange that there's a driver for the 130 but not the 120; HP might give you a reason!
