can keyboard shortcuts be customized like iphone?

System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts.

on the iPhone I can create texting and other shortcuts under the "Keyboard" tab in settings so that two or any number of letters/characters together can mean an entire paragraph or an email address. Thanks for responding so quickly.
System Preferences > Language & Text > Text tab > define your substitutions.
