Q: Missing caption metadata in Export Version

I have a new Canon SX260. When I export version from Aperture 3.3.2, caption info isn't included in the exported file. Location and EXIF are included. Exported versions from my older Canon S2IS and from my iPhone do have caption info.  I can export the metadata into a text file OK. Export preset has "include Metadata" checked. I would expect that Aperture creates a new JPEG with space for all the metadata even if the original file didn't have the space.  Any suggestions to getting the caption included in the exported version?

Picasa is able to read the caption from the exported file so the problem appears to be that Aperture and iPhoto aren't importing the caption information even though they're importing other EXIF info.

How do you check the "Caption" info? And which preset do you use to export your version? When I export an image version with one of the "jpeg" presets with "Metadata included" and import this version again into Aperture, I see that the caption is maintained. The reimported version has the the same caption as the original.

So when do you see the caption missing?

Thanks for reply. I just JPEG Original Size for export and the Metadata box is checked. My experience is like yours when exporting and importing photo from iPhoto or older Canon camera. But if photo was from new Canon camera, import of the exported photo has a blank in the caption field in the Info tab.  Keywords get exported and show up on import. But caption doesn't. Picasa shows that caption is in the file.

Is that the case for all pictures from your new camera? Can it be that the caption contains ethnic characters that may cause problems? I don't have your camera model, so I cannot check this. Hopefully somebody with the same camera can chime in.

I'd try some general trouble shooting:

    • Create a new Aperture library and import and export from this library, to see if the library has a problem.
    • Create a new test account and work from this account, to see, if you have corrupted preferences files or camera presets.

If you see, that the problem occurs only with your library, try to repair your library; if the problem only occours with your account, delete your Aperture user preferences or preset files; see the

Thanks for all the time you've spent.  It's still a mystery. I created a new user, imported photos, added some captions, exported them with different names and then imported those photos. Other JPEGs import caption fine. Photos from SX260 do not show the captions I entered. Instead, there are 31 spaces in the caption fields for those photos. Must be something odd about the files Aperture created on export but can't interpret on import.

Are you sure they are the {space} character?  Are you using a non-standard localization or any keyboard utilities?

What happens if you select one of the blank characters, copy it, and then paste it into the search field of OS X's Character Viewer (accessible via "Edit➞Special Characters" in most apps).

I'm not using any localization or keyboard utilities. Character looks like a space in Word (with paragraph marks on) and search in Character Viewer didn't show anything. With the same environment, I can type in a caption and get it on import with other JPEGs, but with JPEGs originating with the new camera, typing in caption, exporting and importing gets me the 31-32 blank characters in caption instead of what I typed. Caption is correct in Picasa so I don't think it's a typing input problem.

Re: Exports Don't Include IPTC/Copyright Info

Nov 8, 2012 6:39 AM (in response to jas)

I had jpg (not raw) images in Aperture from both a Nikon D5100 and a Nikon AW100. I added captions to the images and then exported them as jpegs. The D5100 jpgs show the caption under Preview, the AW100 jpg do not.

I found a work-around using the free program exiftool (google it) and Terminal.

In terminal I changed to the folder which contained my AW100 images and then entered this command to re-write all the IPTC data.

    exiftool -iptc:all= -tagsfromfile @ -all:all -unsafe  ./

I found an explanation and a solution.  See reply to Kirby Krieger.
