hairline cracks on back panel of intel imac

i went down to the apple store with the intention to purchase the new imac intel. after a few rounds of explanations i decided to get it. the staff helped me set up my imac and asked me to check for any scratches. but before he asked he held up the imac under a light to check for scratches. as a customer who is paying a premium to get apple products, i did the same thing by holding it up in the light to check for scratches.

and unfortunately, the first one they opened there was dust particles inside the back panel as well as hairline cracks below the ports on the back panel n the right side of the power button so i asked for a change.

the second one they opened was from a new shipment which i witnessed myself was trolleyed into the storeroom. it had scratches on the back panel and same cracks appearing on the same places below the ports and the side of the power button. the third to the fourth ones had the same cracks. and since the staff had opened up so many boxes the management decided to give me a refund which i did not ask for, i was prepared to get the one with the least defect. however, one of the managers said "it's like that, made of acrylic."

is it because they had to return all these 4 imacs to the manufacturer for repacking to sell again or is it becasue its a real defect but no other customers realised it? and these cracks appear obvious under the light. if the staff didnt hold the imac up under the light to check i would not have done that and just search for scratches as what would most people do

so i went down to another apple store and told the staff about the situation. the staff was helpful enough, he opened up a box of brand new shipment for imac and i told him where the cracks are and he was surprised and said its a first. he walked over to the demo display n looked at the imac. it has the same cracks. he said it might be batch defect. im not sure if it is a batch defect or is it normal because its made of acrylic? and since all apple products come from that one manufacturer factory in singapore.

Dear Chris, thanks for your detailed answer. there has been a slightly misunderstanding - the cracks or molds or whatever are about one and a half cm long, not 5 (otherwise i would have been really concerned, you are right ...)
stephens hint calmed me, and i hope you as well. i would say, the best thing to do is to look after the machine with the smallest cracks. and as the ibooks had these cracks as well and i have never heard about an ibook crashing down because of this - i think you could do this without a great headache. i mean, there is no other choice right now!
wish you luck!

ok cool. yes i posted this topic in another forum on www.macnn.com

i guess we all got our answers on the "hairline cracks"

they are actually mold lines which are not a defect. phew...

however for those whose imacs had lines which are too long perhaps you guys can get it changed. i have decided to get one soon, of cos only those with 1-1.5cm will make the cut.

Thank God we figured out the crack issue. I was worried my productivity would go down to a snails pace by moving back to a PC with Windows. I mean I can do nothing with a crack in the case that I can only see with a magnifying glass and a 2000 candle power search light.

Of course I am kidding.. The cracks are really nothing to worry about - Now back to what's important. Where did I put those smarties?

alright im gonna get my imac soon. and i realised most of you upgraded your ram. is it really necessary?

im gonna use it for my music and movies abt 20gb, basically. and also some photo editing.

also i have some questions regarding those emulators. programs such as amsn and mercury, does it work for audio and video conferencing with people whom are windows user?

and, unfortunately, i dont own an ipod but i have my creative zen 20gb mp3 player. are there programs to make itunes work for my zen? dont tell me to get a nano or ipod though, my zen works fine. haha

Was investing in all of those Mac computers worth it? I have the 20" iMac, but that's it.

---------

Sorry I did not answer you right away.. Been off of the forums.

You know it really was worth it. Right now I have (1) Mac Mini, (1) 17" iMac, (1) MacBookPro 2.16ghz.

On order (1) 20" iMac and would like to get a MacBook (iBook replacement) when they come out for my wife.

Yes they are all worth it. I have replaced all my Dell's and other computers since BootCamp. I have been waiting for the day I do not have to have multiple computers to do one job. I use the Mac side 99% of the time now and use the Windows to play Age of Empires 3. Oh and to check on Windows only apps like those small company third party apps that will never be ported to the Mac.

Thank you Apple!!!

Sorry Guys, I make a pretty good living as a professional mold maker and I don't want to break any bubbles. I just examined the back of my iMac with a flashlight and observed "shadows" of cracks in the acrylic clearcoat cast on the white background, which would otherwise be invisible. So I did a magnaflux test on them, many more showed up with the use of a professional non destructive test for cracks.

They ARE cracks, NOT mold lines, which are partially filled, slightly extruded, and cast different shadows than cracks. The good news is, forget about them, they are harmless and extremely common in acrylic clearcoats. The chemical companies that supply composites just haven't got it down to an art as of yet.

xspoon,
I agree totally, I named mine Lisa, in homage to the original "Lisa" which I could not afford at the time. I love Lisa, and she doesn't nag constantly, does what I say,,,, oops, better kaibosh where this is going in case my wife sees it. LOL

BTW, magnaflux is a clear dye that gets into the tiniest cracks you could imagine, and under UV light, glows green. I hope in time my acrylic clearcoat developes hundreds of spiderweb cracks, then I'll magnaflux the whole case and hand a UV fluro over it, would look way cooler than any custom POS pee cee.

Thank you Runcle for your reply to my topic. however it's too late and i guess it dosent really matter since not many consumers are complaining about these hairline cracks. (i knew they were cracks from the orange lights, one of the imacs had cracks like lightning, know what i mean?)

Yess! See? i told you guys they are cracks. that stupid bugger from the other forum screamed at me about my post reaffirming that "since its mold lines, why would it crack?!!!!">>>>> for this *******, i think he is prob just spoilt for apple's products, (i quote, "i own a g5, ibook.....they have the same "lines"...and now i own an imac intel...same "lines"...they are mold lines stop calling them cracks!!!!")>>>>whatever.

I have already purchased an imac, i didnt manage to read your reply before buying. i entered the store boldly and the manager saw me and referred me to the sales staff whom attended to me the previous time. i told him i will just get it, saying its an apple product flaw and unfortunately, no one is complaining. he kept quiet and went to the storeroom to get me a new imac. This time, however, i didnt check for the cracks, just for scratches.

~~~My next question is, i wanna connect the imac to my 5.1 speakers. my 5.1 speakers supports optical line in. should i be getting an OPTICAL AUDIO CABLE or just any ORDINARY AUDIO CABLE if I WANNA ACHIEVE A 5.1 OUTPUT. i have checked the price of both and the price difference is double. kindly assist me.
What Magnaflux method did you use? IIRC, it's a magnetic particle and dye penentrant method that is common. I'm an engineer and not aware of anything available for analyzing plastic/acrylic.
I'm a potential iMac buyer here...
No kidding, is that what magnaflux is? Method? It's not the method, it's the product. Genuine Magnaflux Zyglo ZL 4C, it's water based and non flammable, applied sparingly with a q tip, penetrates acrylic deep enough to reveal fractures. It's just a dye, non magnetic, since it's engineered for use on aluminum and ceramic and is water washable. It works on acrylic and if it does cause damage you would have to use a microscope to see it.
I don't recommend anyone using this product on thier iMacs as there are a few tricks involved.
My sincerest apologies to the rest of you happy campers for getting off topic. Engineers annoy me.
I got my iMac last November so it is the last iteration before the Intel ones. I just noticed a crack in the upper left corner on the front and in the top, and something that looks like cracks in the lower left. They appear to be inside the clear casing, actually in the white part. They aren't visible except when there is a light shining from the left and behind. I don't know if they were always there or just appeared; I have had the light next to the Mac (not too close) all along though and just noticed them after 6 months. I'm going to the Apple store this weekend to look at theirs though...
