All that matters is the external drive's format, and that is something you did not mention.

Thanks, i think this fixed my problem. I am trying to format the external drive so that I can synchronise an external HD connected to my Mac with an external HD on a PC at another location using bittorrent sync. Hope it's going to work for me!!
the ExFat reformat on a 16gb USB drive i have is now working nd allowing a 14gb video to transfer.
My only issue now would be to get it to work on a Sony HD tv... Will give it a go tonight.
I know that my LG Smart TV does not allow files off a MAC OS formatted drive but reads Fat drives
Klaus1 is right. if you want windows to access the drive and you want to transfer larger files try formatting the disk with the "ExFAT", otherwise use the Mac standard "Mac OS Extended".
