Problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset:

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    3. Remove the battery (to remove the battery - click here: MacBook or MacBook Pro).
    4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    5. Release the power button.
    6. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
    7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Get the App "Battery Guard" from the app store. After download, open the app and click on the lighning bolt that appears in the menu bar. In the middle of the pop up, it will say Original max, and Current max, followed by a percentage. If the Current max and percentage is very low, you probably need a new battery. If you leave the MacBook plugged in alot when your using it, it will kill the battery life. Only plug in the MacBook when it needs to be charged and when it hits 99 or 100% unplug it until it is very low again. This will make your battery last a long time.

    MacBook 2009 symptoms:

MacBook switches off with no warning when the power adapter was removed.

MacBook switches off with no warning when booting up with power adapter removed.

After dealing with the problem for almost two years and searching the internet from time to time for several days I still found no solution.

Tried resetting SMC, PRAM, and many things more…

coconutBattery showed my battery in good health, now running fine for about an hour without shutting down, no power adapter connected.

Load Cycles: 84 (I almost never used the MacBook without power adapter and thought it could be the reason for the shutdowns, I never calibrated the battery)

    Battery Status : Good

My solution found by accident today fiddling around with the Energy Saver Preferences Pane/Battery settings. I don't know, if all the changes I made are necessary, or just one changed setting. What I did:

    1. Set Computer sleep to "Never"

    2. Set Display sleep to "Never" (ignoring the warning for shorter display life)

    3. Unchecked "Put hard disk to sleep when possible"

    4. Unchecked "Slightly dim the display while on battery power"

Maybe someone tries all changes separately and finds the real culprit…
