a .DS_store file has appeared on my desktop and it cannot be removed, if trashed it just reappears, the file is alread on the HD but the one on the desktop refuses to delete
Open Terminal and copy:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Restart the Mac
How do you "open terminal"?
Go to your Applications folder, then Utilities, then Terminal and open it like any other application.
No matter how you delete that file it will be regenerated as the Finder needs it to disiplay the Desktop and what's on it.
How do i remove the file named "C1EC7F00"?
Have no idea. Where did it come from? Is it an invisible file like the .DS_Store file?
I don't know what kind of file it is or where it came from; it just appeared. It's not invisible. It is on my desktop and can't be moved, renamed, or trashed.
Right click, select Get Info, tell us what it says.
I've already tried that; nothing comes up. No Info window.
I have no suggestion except start your own post, hanging in this one (which is about a different subject) won't be very useful.
Also Google the file name.
I agree with Csound1, but here is some things you can try.
