Yet another TM & NAS problem

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) on an "iMac10,1", Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz.

I have a LaCie NetworkSpaceMax (2 TB) on the same LAN as the iMac. I have a Netgear router (model avaialble on request).

I bought the NAS because it is supposed to be Time Machine friendly. So far, I have it work OK for 1-2 months and then stop backing up. Different problems have been reported each time. All, though, have had something to do with the sparsebundle file TM creates on my NAS. Some have caused TM to report backup failures but most have not.

My current problem is not reported by TM. It goes through the whole "preparing" business for thousands of files, the latest being for 7000+. It then imediatley ships to cleaning up. TM does not show a new backaup havinh occured.

At about that time, in the Console, backupd reports

9/3/12 5:16:03 PMcom.apple.backupd[1898]Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
9/3/12 5:16:04 PMcom.apple.backupd[1898]Backup canceled.
9/3/12 5:16:09 PMcom.apple.backupd[1898]Ejected Time Machine disk image.
9/3/12 5:16:10 PMcom.apple.backupd[1898]Ejected Time Machine network volume.

Just before that avguatd, bin repeatedly reports the following:

9/3/12 5:15:29 PMavguard.bin[615]"/Volumes/johnTM-1/iMac.sparsebundle/bands/3d55" was not completely scanned (maximum recursion exceeded)

I have searched the Snow Leopard discussions and found nothing quite like my problem reported. Anybody out there got any ideas?
