Is a screen protector recommened for the new ipad?

That is a personal choice. I use a screen protector on all of my devices. I got a great screen protector from our Apple store that attaches on the edges only so you don't have to worry about little air bubbles on the screen. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of it. If you search this forum, you will find other opinions. I just like the little extra protection.

Using a screen protector is not officially recommended by Apple. I agree with kb195 in that it's a matter of personal choice.

I have always used screen protectors on my iDevices - iPads and iPod Touch. I use an Otterbox Defender case with my new iPad and that has a built in screen protector. It has paid dividends for me already. I grazed a metal pica ruler across the screen on my new iPad about a week ago and it left a tiny little scrape on the screen protector, but the iPad came through it unscathed.

If you are going to have small kids using it. You never know what they might use on the screen.
