Software Update gets "NSURLErrorDomain error -1100"

I'm getting a long hang and then "NSURLErrorDomain error -1100" in the Updates tab of the App Store. This happens both when I select the tab from within the App Store, or from Software Update in the apple menu.

I don't think I have anything that needs updating at the moment, but obviously I'd like this problem fixed!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time.

Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

Hello, Linc: Thanks for trying to help. I saw messages like this on other threads, and noticed that they seldom get a reply. Maybe it's because it includes very detailed info on how to open Console, but then not very detailed information of how to identify "messages from the last installation or update attempt" that aren't "repetitions of the same message"? There's a warning to be wary of releasing private information; while I can recognize my name and what may be my IP address, I haven't the slightest idea of what other private information might be buried in these messages. Finally, there's no explanation of WHY this information will be useful.

Taking a guess as to what you're looking for, here is a chunk from the bottom of the install log right after I tried the app store again. Interestingly, it continues to add similar content even after I quit the app store.

You've removed the information that I'd need to answer the question, namely, the URL at the beginning of the log extract.

Nothing is "buried" in the log messages. It's all in plain sight. If your name is in the log, and you don't want to reveal it, edit it out. The same goes for your IP address.

The information is useful because it sometimes shows why something isn't working as expected. If you're asking for a tutorial on log interpretation, I don't provide that service.

OK, here's another one. Somehow, I think there might be information somewhere in between "do this" and "a tutorial on log interpretation."

Your system is configured to download updates from a private server, not from Apple. That server isn't working or isn't reachable. If you're bound to an Open Directory or Active Directory domain, or if you're behind a firewall that doesn't allow downloading updates directly from Apple, your network administrator has to solve the problem. Otherwise, proceed as follows.

Back up all data. In the Finder, selectGo Go to Folder...from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and pressreturn:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist

A Finder window will open with an item selected. Delete the selected item. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Log out and log back in. Try Software Update again.

Hi Linc - sounds like you've been able to help others with this error. i'm having the same problem starting today. i already attempted deleting the plist file but still getting the same error. below is the output of my log file:

KURLErrorStatusCode=503, NSErrorFailingURLStringKey=https://swdist.apple.com/content/downloads/31/40/zzzz041-6901/mmfalra8cou4u81xz0 i3jkk9hud6vdv09j/041-6901.English.dist.gz}

any advice appreciated!

sorry i tried the solution suggested of deleting the plist files but that doesn't solve the issue for me... appreciate any other suggestions...

I'm having the same issue myself at the moment, and my system has most definitely NOT been set to download updates from anywhere other than Apple. I believe there must be a server issue right now, possibly due to the announcements Apple made earlier today driving large numbers of people to check for updates. Just try again tomorrow.

the strange thing is that software update on my wife's mac (which doesn't have mountain lion installed) still works fine. so there does seem to be some linkage to OS X 10.8 (or at least 10.8.1). fwiw, there does appear to be an issue with the server listed above (swdist.apple.com):
